One's Interior Virtue

「One’s interior virtue」は「隠された許容」という意味で、限りなく近い未来を想定したものである。私たちは当たり前のようにいるモノといらないモノを選別している。その許容と拒絶を分ける基準はあいまいで不透明だ。なぜ、ここまで人は簡単にモノを捨てることができ、抵抗を感じないのだろうか？それはマクロな単位でしか語られることのない問題に、人々が安心しているからだ。このぬるま湯に浸かりきった現代人に響くものはもっと本質的で無意識な部分の問題なのだ。今回、「無意識の拒絶」をテーマに、人間の髪の毛を使用した作品を制作した。人は伸び続ける髪の毛に「生」を感じているが、その存在は時にして畏怖の対象になり得る。毎日洗い、整える人の印象を左右する髪の毛ですら、切られて床に落ちていった瞬間に嫌悪感のあるモノへと変化し価値観が変わる。人は肉体から離れた身体を極端に嫌う。それは切れて落ちていった髪の毛に「死」を見るからで、これを「無意識な拒絶」とするなら、人がモノを捨てる動機はここに由来しているのではないだろうか？人は役割を終えたモノに少しでも「死」を感じているのかもしれない。私は今回、この死生観や価値観の短絡的な変化に注目した。もし、一度拒絶されたモノを再構築することで人の中に新しい価値が生まれるのであれば、そこには人とモノの間に新たな関係性が生まれるのではないだろうか。とするなら、それは立派な隠された許容と言えるだろう。そして私はこの「無意識の拒絶」がこれから新たな文化を築く上でとても大切な感覚であると考える。現代人は五感の退化と引き換えに様々な文化を獲得してきた。もし、その五感の機能を失っていった時、それに代わる新たなツールが必要になる。今まで無意識に拒絶してきたことを明らかにすることで、デザインや文化は新たな領域を見つけることができるのではないのだろうか。
"One's interior virtue" means "hidden tolerance" and envisions an infinitely near future. We sort out things that are commonplace and things that we don't need. The criteria that separate acceptance and rejection are vague and unclear. Why is it so easy for people to throw things away and feel no resistance? That's because people are relieved by problems that can only be addressed in macro units. What resonates with modern people soaked in this lukewarm water is a more essential and unconscious problem. This time, with the theme of "unconscious rejection," I created a work using human hair. People feel "raw" in their ever-growing hair, but their presence can sometimes be awe-inspiring. Even the hair that affects the impression of a person who is washed and trimmed every day changes into a disgusting thing the moment it is cut and falls to the floor, and the sense of values changes. People extremely hate the body away from the body. It is because we see "death" in the hair that has fallen off, and if we call this "unconscious rejection", isn't this the motive for people to throw things away? People may feel "death" even a little at the things that have finished their roles. This time, I focused on this short-circuit change in the view of life and death and the sense of values. If a new value is created in a person by reconstructing a thing that has been rejected once, a new relationship may be created between the person and the thing. If so, it's a fine hidden tolerance. And I think this "unconscious rejection" is a very important feeling in building a new culture in the future. Modern people have acquired various cultures in exchange for the degeneration of the five senses. If the five senses lose their function, a new tool is needed to replace them. By revealing what we have unknowingly rejected, design and culture may be able to find new territories.
